School Life
English as an Additional Language
Achievement is important in the Hendon School policy as we have over 75 languages represented by our students. The most recent arrivals to Hendon School come from China, Romania, Portugal, Hungary, Poland, Iran, Bulgaria and Afghanistan.
We celebrate the diversity of religion and culture this brings with it. Pupils new to English are supported socially and academically. We want to ensure new arrivals feel safe, they are settled and valued.
We help the pupils through:
-
New to English-Induction course for pupils in early stages of language acquisition.
-
Small reading groups
-
In-class support as required
-
GCSE English curriculum support lessons
-
Homework and revision support at lunchtime, by arrangement.
Other support:
We can organise translators on request for parents.
We encourage community parent groups to form and be involved in the school activities.
