School Life
English as an Additional Language
Hendon school is a truly international community with students from over 70 different nationalities and 65 languages represented by our students. The most recent arrivals to Hendon School come from Afghanistan, Brazil, Hong Kong, Iran, Japan, Sudan, Turkey and Ukraine.
We celebrate the diversity of cultures and religions in our school and encourage students to participate fully in school life. Pupils new to English are supported socially and academically through a buddy system, small group intervention and by the staff body who speak a number of different languages. We want to ensure new arrivals feel safe and that they feel settled and valued in school.
We help the pupils through:
-
New to English-Induction course for pupils in early stages of language acquisition.
-
Intervention reading groups
-
In-class support as required
-
GCSE English curriculum support lessons
-
Homework and revision support at lunchtime, by arrangement.
Other support:
We can organise translators on request for parents.
We encourage the wider community to participate in school life through international events such as culture day or coffee mornings.
