Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.

Students acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on other subjects such as Mathematics, Science, ICT and Art and they learn to become resourceful, innovative and capable citizens.

High quality Design and Technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and wellbeing of the nation and, through evaluation of products students develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.

Students have 6 lessons over 2 weeks

Product Design – AQA

The GCSE course gives learners the opportunity to design and make quality end products using a variety of materials, such as woods and plastics, using a range of different processes. Students will complete a series of projects within these areas prior to choosing their final project, which will involve a final design and to make product, supported by a portfolio of their design work.

Each year students are able to display their work at the annual Design and Technology show

Progression pathways and careers

Graphics and Product design courses teach theoretical and practical skills in the design area. By combining creativity with technology students have a broad knowledge of production methods and materials.

Students are able to progress to level 3 and level 4 courses (University) as well as apprenticeships.

Students are therefore not limited to exact jobs that link up directly with their chosen course. Here are some examples of roles you can do: (It is not exhaustive)

  • Advertising account executive
  • Automotive engineer
  • Marketing executive
  • Purchasing manager
  • Sales executive
  • Designer
