Pupils can visit parks, playgrounds and nursery schools and observe children playing to extend their knowledge. Pupils can volunteer at a Rainbow session or playgroup, or to babysit, to increase their interaction with children. Pupils can help friends and family with young children to develop basic childcare skills, and gain an understanding of children’s behaviour.

Pupils can read around the subject studied in class, and research topics in the library. They can visit clinics and maternity units and speak to staff and mothers.

Progression pathways and careers

Child Development is a good basis for students interested in working in any area with children or families. There is a wide range of careers from midwifery, nursing, social work, nursery teaching to nannying, child psychology and paediatrics.
